چکیده

This study explored perceptual development on the identification of word-final vowel length in L2 Japanese in terms of boundary location and width. Native speakers of Chinese (NC) and Japanese (NJ) participated in the study. The NC were further classified into two, NC-higher or NC-lower. NC-lower demonstrated wider boundary width and greater boundary location than the other two did, but NJ and NC-higher were not significantly different. These results suggest that L2 learners’ perception function in the L2 can approximate to native speakers’ as learning proceeds. In addition, pitch affected both NC-higher’s and NC-lower’s boundary location in the same manner as it did to NJ’s. NC may have learned such perception; moreover they may have modified their perception in accordance with NJ’s production.

L2 Learners’ Lexical Inferencing: Perceptual Learning Style Preferences, Strategy Use, Density of Text, and Parts of Speech as Possible Predictors

This study was intended first to categorize the L2 learners in terms of their learning style preferences and second to investigate if their learning preferences are related to lexical inferencing. Moreover, strategies used for lexical inferencing and text related issues of text density and parts of speech were studied to determine their moderating effects and the best predictors of lexical infe...

Effects of Pitch Fall and L1 on Vowel Length Identification in L2 Japanese

This study investigated whether and how the role of pitch fall in the first language (L1) interacts with its use as a cue for Japanese phonological vowel length in the second language (L2). Native listeners of Japanese (NJ) and L2 learners of Japanese with L1 backgrounds in Mandarin Chinese (NC), Seoul Korean (NK), American English (NE), and French (NFr) participated in a perception experiment....

Effects of Pitch Cues on the Identification of Vowel Length in L2 Japanese

This study explored the effects of pitch cues on the identification of the word-final Japanese vowel length, which is primarily cued by vowel duration. Native speakers of English (NE), Chinese (NC) and Japanese (NJ) participated in the experiment. Learners, who do not use duration distinctively in their L1, utilize duration as a cue for the contrast and they can approximate boundary location to...

Perceptual Training of Vowel Length Contrast of Japanese by L2 Listeners: Effects of an Isolated Word versus a Word Embedded in Sentences

In an attempt to improve the perception of vowel length contrasts in Japanese by L2 learners (L1 Korean), we compared two different training methods. The first one involved training L2 learners with sets of isolated words contrasting the vowels (Word training), whereas the other training involved presenting same words within sentences (Sentence training). Word training and sentence training bot...

The role of vowel duration cue in L1: Effects on L2 learners' identification of phonological vowel length in Japanese

This study investigated the effects of learners’ L1 on their identification of Japanese phonological vowel length at three speaking rates. Native listeners of Japanese (NJ) and learners of Japanese with L1 backgrounds in Finnish (NFin), American English (NE), Russian (NR), and French (NFr) participated in the study. The results showed that the proportion of “long” responses increased as a funct...
